When the jelly like cushion between your vertebrae slips out or ruptures, its called a herniated disc. It can cause pain in the disc area, decrease mobility, and pinched nerves. It can often be difficult to diagnose the herniated disc as some just attribute it to general back pain. However, this condition can get worse over time, sometimes resulting in need of surgery. Its important to consult with a doctor when you experience back pain or neck pain to see if it is a more serious condition.

  1. Apply ice or heat. If the herniated disc happens suddenly, try applying ice to it in 20 minute increments for a few days. After that, start applying heat to the affected area to promote muscle relaxation. This will help relieve tension in the muscles and soothe the muscle pain.
  2. Avoid the same positions for too long. Sitting upright for too long can cause the muscles in the area to tense up and spasm. Try moving between sitting and standing to keep different muscles activated. This will help to promote muscle strength and fight fatigue. Also, avoid laying in a horizontal position for longer than needed because this can place the muscles in stiff positions.
